The SAG-AFTRA union has finally been able to reach a deal with the AMPTP, which has now ended the Hollywood actors strike on November 9, after 118-days.
Here in this article is a breakdown of some of the new 2023 deal; as the full details have not yet been revealed; due to the tentative agreement being reviewed by the SAG-AFTRA National Board.
This new contract will be lasting for 3 years, and the union is describing this deal as a achieving an “extraordinary scope”; as it is worth over one billion dollars.
In part of the union’s statement, SAG-AFTRA released this “We have arrived at a contract that will enable SAG-AFTRA members from every category to build sustainable careers. Many thousands of performers now and into the future will benefit from this work”.
AI Consent & Compensation
Just like the WGA deal that was reached in September 2023; there are finally contracts in place to protect performers from threats such as AI, which now includes consent and compensation.
Health & Pensions
The union comments in their post from X: “health and pension caps have been substantially raised”, these also include “outsize compensation increases for background performers, and critical contract provisions protecting diverse communities”.
Streaming
In this new deal, there is now a “streaming participation bonus” made available; which means there are brand new residuals being paid to performers for streaming programs.
What does this mean now that the strike is over?
Performers who were employed or are going to be, by previously struck companies, are now able to resume work on any projects, and promote their content through press junkets/online interviews and various other places such as by attending carpet events.
There will be a lot of casting announcements happening where the studios either hired actors for content just before the strikes, or are now able to finalize their contracts for upcoming projects.
Also, upcoming projects will be changing release dates again, for example, Venom 3 has just changed back to November 8, 2024. See more 2024 release dates here.
As this is still a developing story, there will be more details to follow, once SAG-AFTRA releases more information.
