Marvel reveals images for ‘Spider-Man: Freshman Year’

At San Diego Comic Con 2022, Marvel Studios revealed plenty of surprising new images about the upcoming animated series Spider-Man: Freshman Year.

These images finally displayed the style that this animation will be in; Marvel are taking a comic approach, basing the art style on Spider-Man comics from the 1960s.

This series is said to be a form of prequel to Peter’s origin in the MCU. However, the images and information that you are about to see will contradict this synopsis.

Images from SDCC 2022

The images below show Peter Parker and friends, Daredevil, Norman Osborn, Harry Osborn, Aunt May and more.

Peter Parker/Spider-Man

Peter will be wearing multiple suits as the series progresses; starting with his homemade suit and there are currently five more suit design previews below:

A recent exclusive report from The Illuminerdi suggests that Tom Holland will not be reprising by voicing this series. However, there’s been no official confirmation as of yet.

Norman Osborn

Marvel Studios

In this timeline, Norman Osborn is acting as a mentor to Peter, instead of what Tony Stark did in Captain America: Civil War. There’s a huge parallel between these two images, right down to the lamps and other objects situated. This further supports that it’s not in the exact timeline that Tom Holland’s Peter is in.

This was probably one of ths most unexpected parts of Freshman Year; Charlie Cox is voicing Daredevil. Matt Murdock will be wearing a red and black suit (as seen in the image above). There is also a rumour that Charlie Cox will also be wearing a similar red and black suit in Marvel Studios Echo series on Disney Plus.

Peter & Friends

Peter’s friends will appear such as Amadeus Cho, Harry Osborn, Nico Minuro from The Runaways. There doesn’t seem to be Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds here. Harry Osborn must be taking the place of his best friend just like the comics and previous non-MCU movies.

All of the villains in the animated Spider-Man series Spider-Man: Freshman Year such as The Chameleon, Doctor Octopus and Scorpion

There’s a large ensemble of villains showing up such as Scorpion, Doctor Otto Octavius and The Chameleon.

Doctor Strange

Joining the web-slinger, is Doctor Strange, this may not be based on Benedict Cumberbatch’s version. Benedict’s iteration did also appear different to this, when he passed through that animated universe in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

More scenes from Spider-Man: Freshman Year

In the first image, Doctor Strange seems to be engaged in a fight while trying to rescue Nico Minuro from The Runaways. Second image: Spider-Man is swinging in his homemade suit.

Is Spider-Man’s Disney+ Series MCU Canon?

There’s no clear information about whether Marvel is connecting this story to the MCU or not. It could be canon to the MCU as a whole by being on a different earth. The multiverse Saga is still part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but judging by the characters that are already going to show up in this, it doesn’t match up with Tom Holland’s continuity, therefore seems to be some form of What if…? Scenario.

Freshman Year release date

Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Freshman Year, an Original series, will be streaming in 2024 on Disney Plus.

Marvel has also released images for the animated series X-Men ’97.
