I’ve been sent a 4K UHD copy of Scream VI to review, it’s my first time seeing the film. This article will also be exploring the bonus content and a video of the physical media.
Scream VI directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett stars Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Jack Champion, Henry Czerny, Mason Gooding, Liana Liberato, Dermot Mulroney, Devyn Nekoda, Jenna Ortega, Tony Revolori, Josh Segarra, Samara Weaving with Hayden Panettiere and Courteney cox.
This is a fantastic slasher flick! The writers have still found new ways of always keeping this franchise contemporary and fresh.
It does deal with the aftermath of the fifth movie and social commentary about how people are easily manipulated to react in a certain way about what happened, quite cleverly crafted to match the way mob mentalities work in current times, when misinformation is shared online.
The events in this film are also presented on a grand-scale; this time by taking these characters out of a quaint sub-urban town and placing them into the big city of New York.
It’s an awesome homage to the previous films in the franchise. Scream VI has a shockingly well-connected story, making this also one of the most meta sequels of them all.
The action and intensity is dialed up a notch, with multiple scenes keeping a high level of suspense about who the killer could be.
Ghostface’s scenes are pulse-racing and more terrifying than ever before; as the kills are so public, it feels as if nowhere is safe! The iconic phone calls have a consistent level of quality to them; they are just as funny, with a slice of terror as they’ve always been in the franchise..
There’s a steady amount of kills throughout the films and the pacing is just right for a slasher film.
Melissa barrera gave a brilliant performance as the leading role, alongside Jasmin Savoy Brown; who stands out with her long exposition monologues, that were comedic and direct to the point.
With these actors already developing their characters across previous movies, the chemistry between “the core four” works so good together. The new supporting casting additions did a wonderful job with keeping the film moving along.
Kirby Reed (Hayden Panittierre) and Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) continuing to be in the sequels were utilized really well in this movie, glad that Hayden wasn’t back as just a quick cameo and they both gave strong performances.
Visuals
This sequel has a high production quality; multiple practical set constructions look amazing, the fine attention to detail for the props and the stab scenes looked so realistic. The film is presented in a widescreen format and there are subtitles available in multiple languages.
Sound
It’s in Dolby Atmos, the soundtracks worked well for the film and the mixing was superb, especially for hearing the voice of Ghostface.
The scoring by Brian Tyler and Sven Faulconer delivered some of the best compositions in this film and I loved hearing Marco Beltrami’s score again.
Final thoughts
Both directors delivered on a very entertaining horror film, with plenty of scary scenes, terrific action sequences and a high amount of suspense that could leave you on the edge of your seat!
There have been interesting stories throughout the films, however this one has renewed my interest in Scream films the most; as the filmmakers are willing to expand the scope of where Ghostface goes. The story wraps up well, with a satisfying pay-off.
What’s included in the 4K UHD release?
There’s a slipcover, and one disc in the case.
The startup menu is quite bland with just an image and some plain black and white font for the menu titles, there’s also no music either. It’s disappointing that creativity is starting to lack in this area, and it’s been happening to more than just this film.
Special features
There is a satisfying amount of behind the scenes included in this 4K UHD copy. Although, there are no deleted scenes on this. And the gag reel is being kept as an exclusive for the digital release.
First special feature includes an audio commentary by the filmmakers.
Here are 7 more special features (titles may contain spoilers):
Death Comes to the City
Cast and crew discussing the script to the new film and how Scream 6 compares to the previous in the franchise, which is quite eye-opening of the complexities to making this in New York.
The Faces of Death
Screenwriter and producer James Vanderbilt, cast and various others discussing the relationships/chemistry between the characters as they progress over multiple films and representation.
Also, with how they brought back fan-favourites such as Hayden Panettierre and Courtney Cox still returning.
More Meta than Meta
This one is a celebration of slasher horror films that changed pop culture since the first movie and how meta these films are.
Bloodbath at Bodega
It’s a spoiler in the film to mention here, all I’ll say is how much action there is increased in these sequences that surprised me.
An apartment to die for
Bringing Ghostface to life throughout this new film; the physicalities of the character, and the rest of the cast dealing with action.
The Night Train to Terror
It’s astonishing to see the sets they have actually built from scratch, that I would thought were on a real location.
Theater of Blood
Another discussion about set designing, it would be a spoiler to go into anymore detail with this one.
Paramount Pictures and Amber Spyglass movie Scream VI is available on DVD, Blu-ray™ & 4K Ultra HD™ from 10th July.
