Marvel Studios is releasing their upcoming title Thor: Love and Thunder – releasing on July 8. Directed by Taika Waititi.
This MCU movie features a sinister villain called Gorr the God Butcher – played by Batman Begins star Christian Bale.
First appearance
Here is a brief summary of the character:
Gorr the God Butcher first appeared in November 2012 in Thor: God of Thunder, Vol. 1: The God Butcher. Gorr grew up with no superhuman abilities; on a planet with no name. This character also has a crippled leg and later on in life stuggles with Sun fever.
Young Gorr asks his parents why the Gods are never seen anywhere to help anyone. He loses his father to illness and his mother is fatally attacked by Dinosaur-like creatures after saving him. This is all where the hatred began towards the Gods
The God Butcher also once had a family, however his pregnant wife meets her tragic end due to an earthquake. He lost many other children to illness and the lost all the last of his faith towards the Gods; for not helping him once again.
All-Black the Necrosword
These events causes Gorr to travel to another planet to discover a symbiotic weapon made by Knull (God of the Symbiotes). He chooses to wield All-Black the Necrosword; this assists him with seeking the extinction of gods.
This Necrosword also imbues Gorr with special powers such as Constituent-Matter Manipulation, Superhuman Strength, Durability & Reflexes, Longevity and Regeneration. .
Encounter with Thor
Thor had many problems with the God Butcher in stories. Gorr was killing gods, when he came across Thor Odinson. The first encounter nearly killed Thor after he was attacked in the 9th Century. This villain is greater threat to go up against in the movie, it’s paramount that Chris Hemsworth’s Thor will need the help of a group of heroes. There’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Mighty Thor, Korg, Zeus Lady Sif and likely more that are yet to be revealed.
In August 2021, set photos surfaced online revealing Christian Bale in the Gorr costume. There was also toy merch in April 2022 that revealed the first official merchandise look of Gorr the God Butcher.
