Paramount Pictures UK has sent over a Blu-Ray copy of Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie, to review. This animated film recently released on physical media, on December 12. Rated: U – directed by Cal Brunker.
Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie is a fun kid-friendly animated film. The franchise has already covered a show about the superhero dogs who protect their city, in The Mighty Pups.
Now, there’s the addition of the pups dealing with another superpowered storyline in a film version, caused by a meteor landing in Adventure City.
It does become very Marvel-ized, and they are basically gaining the powers of the Fantastic Four, X-Men and some Justice League members… which is what also happens in the 2022 movie DC League of Super-pets.
However, young children are not likely to take notice of it being generic, so thinking in this frame of mind, it’s exciting to see dogs with powers saving the day, and it’s filled with positive messages of good prevailing, and characters believing in themselves, such as rooting for Skye, as the film heavily focused on this character.
There are also many adorable and funny dog characters featured in the movie, in addition to the animated humans.
Humdinger and Victoria Vance have teamed up, these characters are the typical “bad guys” to catch. It’s a very simple plot and these are not scary villains to watch.
There’s enough action to keep children entertained for remainder of the 1 hour and 24 minutes… although, maybe not so much for parents.
This film visually looks awesome, with a great attention to minor details such as high quality material textures, environments and characters. Mikros have also done great animation work here. I also love the vibrant colour grading!
There are child actors voicing the roles for these pups and the human leader Ryder. It’s been British dubbed for this UK release just like the previous film and tv series, which is different to the actors who are voicing the movie in the US, for example McKenna Grace isn’t voicing Skye here, it’s Holly Thomas.
I would have preferred the audio mixing for the dialogue to be improved, as well as the voice work , instead of it often sounding like it was read directly from a page, with very little expression in their voices. When hearing clips on YouTube, the original American voice actors sound better.
There’s been a high popularity surrounding this franchise for years; largely due to merchandise appearing like it is on nearly everything. I also used to see Paw Patrol birthday cakes everyday, in a warehouse that I worked in for 4 years.
It’s very much apparent in The Mighty Movie, that it’s also pushing in as much new merchandise in scenes as possible, which can be seen like some forced toy trailer.
The script also self-indulges with the audience, in a 4th wall break; by directly aiming lines at parents which jokingly imply that they would likely be buying more of the new toys seen in the film.
Final thoughts
Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie caught me by surprise with how the visually looks and the animations are great!Overall, I’m sure that the youngest audiences will likely enjoy this movie a lot.
