Prince Charles Cinema cancels AI film private screening

On June 17, Prince Charles Cinema, London advertised in a now deleted social media post; that the cinema was going to be holding a private event for an AI film. The cinema has since issued a statement cancelling the premiere.

This 72 minute feature-length film is titled “The Last Screenwriter” – directed by Peter Luisi, and it is filmed on-camera with actors agreeing to take part in this story and script entirely generated by AI.

The Last Screenwriter was going to be getting a world premiere at Prince Charles Cinema on Saturday June 23, 2024. However, there has been pushback from the film community online regarding AI Generated films being injected into these artistic environments.

Here are some of the comments from film fans on social media when Prince Charles Cinema advertised this private screening was happening:

AI models usually consist of the theft of millions of people’s work unless the model is isolated by training on your own work, or there’s consent/payment from other creators of these works.

There are many other reasons why Generative AI is anti-art and anti-labour, it contributes to the loss of jobs and in this article I go into further detail: Generative A.I. has been spreading further in multiple industries. The Last Screenwriter ironically adda to a growing concern where humans could have been hired to write this movie and instead been replaced by AI.

Prince Charles Cinema issued a statement on Twitter/X:

Yesterday we posted about a private hire event taking place this coming weekend which featured a project whose script had been written by AI.

The client informed the private hire team that this was an “experiment in filmmaking” by a filmmaker hoping to engage in the discussion about Al and its negative impact on the arts. The film’s content reflected this, so the hire team took the booking.

The feedback we received over the last 24hrs once we advertised the film has highlighted the strong concern held by many of our audience on the use of Al in place of a writer which speaks to a wider issue within the industry.

As a result of this, we have decided NOT to go ahead with the hire.
Our decision is rooted in our passion for movies and listening to those who support what we do.

Will more cinemas follow with this type of response after listening to the pushback? The film community can at aleast stay protected for now by Prince Charles Cinema cancelling this AI film event.
