Star Wars: The Acolyte Episode 6 ‘Teach/Corrupt’ Review

This review contains some spoilers and a brief summary of episode 6 for the Disney Plus series Star Wars: The Acolyte.

Things are coming to a head in the Leslye Headland series, and following the tumultuous spirited lightsaber battles of last week on Khofar. We were expecting a comedown of sorts.

Episode six starts with Osha waking up on an unknown planet, but reminiscent of Ahch-To; where Luke Skywalker resided in The Last Jedi. She witnesses Qimir doing his rehabilitation exercises, swimming in a cooling (regenerative) pool and he’s seductively trying to woo Osha to the darkside.

Meanwhile, Mae posing as Osha, is with Sol on her way back to Coruscant to speak to the Jedi Council.

The episode takes the task of explaining to both girls, the differences they have not witnessed. Mae gets to see the light of the Jedi in the soulful Sol, as he promises to tell her the truth of the fire on Brendock.

Qimir, though, is showing Osha the possibilities of the dark side. Teasing and tempting her, Osha is as Obi-Wan would elaborate, seduced by the dark side of the force.

Bazil is a nice twist in the detective series, his nose doing the job that Sol’s eyes and other senses cannot do, by discovering Mae’s true identity aboard the ship.

The other pairing in the episode is that of green skinned Venestra and her padawan Mog (thought she said Mark the first time); and unfortunately this was not a thrilling pair. This is due to the acting of the two actors, poor in comparison and grating in delivery, they are easily the worst two performances in television Star Wars memory.

Nevertheless, the narrative gives them the opportunity to discover the massacre on Khofar, with lightsaber blades apparent in the casualties injuries. Mog asks ‘do you think Sol could do this?’, Venestra shoots down the accusation.

Qimir though seemingly has bigger plans in the series, there is a connection between he and Sol. Sol does not remember him and he states he was a jedi, ‘a long time ago’. This enticing duality between master and possible apprentice is hanging over the series.

As again mentioned, this is being marketed as a detective series and in the form of Sol we have our Poirot yet he is not fully sharing all the information at his disposal. This series is now holding all the cards and keeping them close to their chest.

At the conclusion, Mae puts on Qimir’s helmet – the sensory deprivation of it all could mean she is comforted by the situation or the answers will be revealed to her in a flashback – perhaps not a full episode length – but be prepared.

Two episodes remain and still we wait for this series to fully kick into gear.
