At the beginning of 2023, we reported that Eddie Murphy was interested in returning for a fifth Shrek movie, as well as a Donkey spin-off, and there has since been a few updates about this upcoming installment.
Dreamworks Animation has now revealed the release date, as well as casting updates for Shrek 5.
The first movie was released 23 years ago; earning a worldwide box office figure of $492.1 million and in 2010; the fourth film titled Shrek Forever After, ended up gaining $756.2 million worldwide.
The returning voices currently announced so far are Mike Myers who is well known as the titular character Shrek, Cameron Diaz returns to voice Princess Fiona and Eddie Murphy is back as the very chatty Donkey.
At the moment there has not been any other voices revealed to return, from looking on various posts, fans are hoping that John Lithgow will return; who voiced Lord Farquad in the first Shrek film, as well as John Cleese who played Fiona’s father and Julie Andrews who was voicing the princess’ mother.
Eddie Murphy mentioned in an interview with Collider, that he “recorded the first act” for Shrek 5 “four or five months ago”. Murphy also brings up that there is still a “Donkey one [spin-off movie] next” after the release of the new Shrek film.
When is Shrek 5 releasing in cinemas?
Shrek 5 is scheduled to release in cinemas on July 1, 2026.
