The Royal We follows Princess Bea (Mallory Janson), who leads a normal life while keeping her true identity a secret. However, her life takes an unexpected turn when she discovers that her sister; who was set to marry Prince Desmond (Charlie Carrick), is now dating a plumber.
Desmond seeks Bea out to marry her, and in doing so, it would prevent further conflict between their families and maintain peace over a disputed piece of land.
As they embark on their journey together, they start to fall in love, but they soon realise that their relationship will require significant sacrifices and personal growth.
The Royal We was a great film and felt like a fresh unique story that I had not seen before. I found the film clever; like a mixture of watching an old-fashioned historical film set in modern times with phones.
Although, the plot was slightly like Romeo and Juliet, with both families’ parents not liking each other, and the film even makes a direct reference to Romeo and Juliet.
The story was very engaging and I found myself interested in seeing how these events would unfold. I connected with the characters early on and found it amusing how Bea, still upset from a breakup, appeared and looked so different compared to her composed business-minded royal persona. I loved the relationship between Desmond and Bea.
It was sweet to see how they brought out different sides of each other. Bea initially came across as a bit unkind to Desmond, but I felt it was more about her resistance to returning to her princess life. She was projecting her anger onto him, but she also helped him understand what it’s like to live a normal life.
There was a lot of heart in this film, and I grew fond of Desmond, especially when he confessed he had never experienced true love due to his royal upbringing.
The film also had plenty of comedy which made me chuckle. Certain characters were especially funny, and I thought Charlie and Mallory had great chemistry, playing off each other with excellent comedic timing.
A few standout moments included a scene with a car following them and another where the two leads were being told off, making it feel like they were kids again despite being adults.
I also liked Bea’s outfits and shoes. Her normal life outfit style seemed to suit her better than her princess outfits at times.
However, the film isn’t without its flaws, I felt it could have benefited from diving deeper into the emotional moments; as everything felt a bit safe.
The chase scenes, for instance, could have been more exciting and entertaining, and when the characters were sneaking out, I wished there had been more effort put into making those scenes more engaging.
As for the ending, it felt very rushed for the final scene and it ended very abruptly which left me wanting more.
Overall The Royal We is a charming film with romance, heart and a great cast, if you are looking for a fresh unique easy-going lighthearted romance then this film is for you.
