A Breed Apart – Likeable characters let down by choppy, fast-paced camera work (Review)

5 of the cast in a group scene from A Breed Apart film.

This is a review for the 2025 film A Breed Apart – directed by Griff Furst and Nathan Furst.

The story follows Violet (Grace Caroline Currey ) and her brother; who are best friends and do YouTube together. They get an invite to an island for a social media star’s reality competition, where they all have to capture dogs that have been left on the island. Unknown to them, the dogs are killers and go on a rampage, so Grace and the other influencers must work to survive.

One of the film’s strongest points is its cast of likeable characters, I found myself laughing out loud many times throughout.

Each character brings their unique skills to the story. The group dynamic is generally friendly and supportive, which adds warmth and heart to the chaos. However, there is one member who brings a darker, more bad energy to the group, creating tension, which makes for exciting moments.

Grace leads the cast with charm and a natural screen presence that makes her instantly likeable. All the cast have great performances. I also liked Violet’s outfits and boots.

Unfortunately, this film is let down by a few things. The cinematography or directors for this film made it hard to follow what was happening, as everything is so fast-paced in the action scenes and very choppy. I found it pretty hard to see how the characters were fighting. Another thing was the characters, sometimes they would just watch people getting hurt from a distance being calm and acting like it’s entertainment, this was funny and made me laugh but at the same time it felt unlike violet’s character and sort of ruins her character, but I get it was more for the comedic aspect.

I also wish there was a bit more of a conclusion to the final scene, as it was slightly sad and left inconclusive about a certain character. I also thought the film could have done a better job explaining a certain aspect to the story.

Overall, A Breed Apart isn’t a great film, although it has its good moments with some engaging characters and gory action. Unfortunately it’s let down by its choppy, fast-paced camera work, which often makes it difficult to follow the action or understand what the characters are doing. I’d be interested in a sequel to see what happens to certain characters, but I hope the cinematography is improved and the story becomes a bit clearer.
