A new Knight Rider movie has been announced to be in the works at Universal.
Knight Rider is Glen A. Larson’s iconic 80s franchise, which spawned a pilot movie, original and rebooted show, spin-offs, as well as a TV movie, and multiple games.
Hayden Schlossberg, Jon Hurwitz, and Josh Heald are the creators of the Karate Kid spin-off series Cobra Kai, who are working on this new Knight Rider movie.
What is Knight Rider about?
It all began in the 1980s TV movie pilot; when an undercover detective called Michael Long (Larry Anderson) is shot in the face, while on an assignment. Long is then saved by Wilton Knight’s medical proffessionals; where they give him a facial reconstruction as David Hasselhoff. Devon Miles and Wilton ask him to join FLAG (Foundation for Law and Government). He accepts and is given a new identity as Michael Knight.
The science-fiction aspect comes into it when Michael has a crime fighting partner, although this is no ordinary pair up… As it is an A.I. talking Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am called K.I.T.T. (Knight Industries Two Thousand).
What can K.I.T.T. do?
K.I.T.T. is bulletproof with it’s molecular bonded shell, the car can also leap high using turbo boost, reaching super speeds with it’s rocket boost, scan buildings/go into surveillance mode, tow heavy objects, jam signals, offer medical assistance, at the time this was all futuristic state of the art technology for the show including the ability to self-drive. The car got upgrades and slight redesigns as the seasons progressed.
Which car will be used in the new movie?
It is not yet revealed who will be starring as Michael Knight in the new movie, or which car they will use. Maybe they will go back to a retro-feel and bring back the look of a Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am car, with more upgrades.
Although, there were attempts to move away from this car in the past, firstly, when the 1991 movie came out called Knight Rider 2000 starring David Hasselhoff; KITT was dismantled and Michael ended up putting his circuits into heavily modified 1991 red Dodge Stealth. Secondly, the talking car became a Ford Shelby GT500KR, in the 2008 – 2009 reboot series starring Justin Bruening as Mike Traceur.
