In Your Dreams; directed by Alex Woo, is a fantastic animated film that blends nearly every genre, from fantasy and action to horror, romance, drama, and comedy, all into one yet heartfelt story.
What really stood out was how the movie managed to balance so many tones at once. It could be funny one moment and deeply emotional or even a bit dark the next. Despite being advertised for kids, I think it’s actually more suited for older children or teenagers and families since the story and humour are surprisingly mature at times and younger kids may get scared.
The comedy in In Your Dreams was especially clever. There were a lot of jokes that leaned towards a more grown-up sense of humour, things like references to the dark web, fake IDs, and even a few jokes involving nudity. It all felt not forced, and it added to the film’s charm. Another funny moment for me was when the Sandman was explaining things as it had some clever yet funny writing.
Beyond the humour, the film had lots of emotional moments. There were several moments that made me feel for the characters, and by the end, I was invested in their journeys. I especially liked how the ending left some things open so you don’t fully know the fate of certain characters, but the story makes it clear that, no matter what happens, characters will always love each other.
The cast was another highlight; Simu Liu, Cristin Milioti, as well as Jolie Hoang-Rappaport and Elias Janssen were both excellent, bringing warmth and emotion to their roles. It’s a shame they didn’t get to film together, because their chemistry could have made some scenes even more powerful. Still, their individual performances stood out and added a lot of heart to the movie.
We also get a funny post-credit scene that tricks you into thinking there could be a sequel but I would still like to have a sequel
Overall, In Your Dreams is an emotional, heartfelt funny film with good comedy a few horror moments and lots of charm. It’s definitely one of Netflix’ stronger films and an amazing film all altogether. I feel like this film would have been perfect for the cinema. I highly recommend watching. 4 ⭐️
