Red Planet (4K Blu-ray review)

Tom Sizemore, Val Kilmer and Carrie-Anne Moss in Red Planet

The science fiction film ‘Red Planet (2002)’ has recieved a 4K release.

This film follows a group of astronauts who are flying to Mars to carry out a mission. Unfortunately, their spaceship malfunctions as it lands, and things start to go wrong for the crew.

The film was good for the first 20 minutes or so, but after that, I was completely lost and had no clue what was happening or going on. I liked how the film introduced the characters and the world at the beginning, and there were some funny and enjoyable comedic moments at the start, and the film also had some romance.

The movie has a very small cast, I believe roughly 8 actors in the whole film including side characters or people with less than a minute screen time. This is very rare to see in any film nowadays. It was nice to see the characters bonding with each other early on throughout the plot. However, after those first 20 minutes, the film became very confusing and I found myself rather bored and muddled with the story and overall plot.

The good news is that the 4K presentation was great to watch and clearly showed off the 4K technology. The colours really popped off the screen and everything looked shiny, vibrant, and clean. Some of the effects could have been better, especially the fire effects, which looked quite fake and unrealistic at times. Other than that, the film looked very good. Even though I didn’t enjoy the movie itself, the 4K was a visual treat and is a nice addition to a collection if you want something to show off the 4K aspect!
