‘Looney Tunes: The Day The Earth Blew Up’ Review

Daffy Duck and Porky Pig presenting themselves in a scene

Daffy Duck and Porky Pig return to the big screen, in a feature length animated film.

Looney Tunes: The Day The Earth Blew Up (2024) is a film mired and subsequently failed by the David Zaslov stewardship of Warner Bros. The film was made and set for release until it, like its cousin – Coyote v Acme – was shunned from a public release schedule and used as a cost-saving initiative along with Batgirl and other intellectual properties.

However, with Warner Bros. experiencing a record year in terms of ticket sales and box office led by Oscar nominated Sinners and One Battle After Another. Now is the time to test the waters.

The Looney Tunes brand and stable of characters are ones familiar to numerous generations from the work of Chuck Jones and Tex Avery to the cross-pollination of synergy that was Space Jam with Michael Jordan.

Led by Bugs Bunny, the troop are mainstays in the cultural mindframe and the opportunity for Daffy and Porky to helm a new film focused upon their friendship is welcome.

The film follows a tale of a small-town being overrun by an alien invasion, where they use flavoured bubblegum to turn the townfolk into mindless zombies. Our intrepid pair endeavour to save the world before it is too late, all while Porky is falling in love with a female lab assistant.

Zaniness abounds as expected with these two in cahoots but the odd drop of a fart joke coupled with satirical swipes at consumerism and the evading intrusion of corporations upon our lives. Most of that satire will go over children’s heads but the adults will be entertained also.

For all the reboots of various superheroes where the risk may be higher and the possibility of the impending Clayface failing is natural; why studios and production companies do not make more new original stories featuring established characters is one of the film industry’s ongoing oddities

Thankfully so long as familiar faces as Daffy Duck and Porky Pig grace our scenes, people and families will flock to see them.

The Day The Earth Blew Up is distributed by Vertigo Releasing,  in UK and Ireland cinemas on Friday 13th February.
