This is a review for Chloe Ray Warmoth’s comedy-horror short film ‘Creepy Af’.
The film follows a super popular, perfect girl called Emma (Sharlize True), who is also kind. She goes to school with a creepy boy named Malcolm (Seth Lee), someone everyone is slightly scared of and tends to avoid. As the story unfolds, we find out that Malcolm’s mum is a killer and wants him to follow in her footsteps. He also hears his mum’s voice inside his head all the time. The problem is, Malcolm might be too kind actually to kill people. At the same time, Malcolm discovers that the boy Emma is dating Jax (Connor Finnerty) is just using her to have sex with. Will Malcolm be able to control his killer urges, or will he finally give in and make his first kill?
Creepy Af was a fantastic short film, it felt like I was watching two different films combined from a teen high school romantic comedy while at the same time being a Friday the 13th type of film. The best comparison to this film is like Lisa Frankenstein. I loved the visual style of the film it was all bright and colourful and gave it a Disney/Nickelodeon type of teen movie look. Everything looked bright. At the same time when the darker moments happened, the film looked dark and gritty and was filmed more like a horror but the different tones blended so well together.
The opening of the film is just like the title says “creepy af!” It did a great job at building tension especially due to the dripping water. The story was good and intriguing. I was curious how events would unfold and was also pleasantly surprised by how the story unfolded overall.
I also thought the outfits really pop in this film and gave Creepy Af a summer vibes type of look. I loved Emma’s outfits and shoes throughout the film. While Malcom’s look gave a sinister contrast to Emma’s outfit; with a fully black outfit and hooded coat. If you look very at the touch of detail as Malcolm, like Emma are both wearing jewellery. I’m not sure if this was intentional but it helped show a little bit of similarity despite the complete difference in characters.
As for the performances, the cast all did a wonderful job and the film is full of talented actors including Jadah Marie and more. Sharlize True did a fantastic job playing the popular girl, and was good at showing fear and bravery, she also had small moments of being a bit badass at times! Seth Lee was great at acting creepy and really showed off his acting skills, especially since he doesn’t talk much throughout the film; so he has to rely on facial expressions. You could clearly see his emotions shift throughout the film which showed his talent. Connor Finnerty did a good job playing a showoffy and not very nice teen. Overall, the cast was great.
While Creepy AF was an enjoyable short film, it felt too brief. Just as the story began to build, it ended rather abruptly. That said, the end credit scene was sweet and cute. The film would have benefited from more character development. For example, Emma’s friend and Malcolm’s family weren’t explored enough, especially why Malcolm was being pushed to kill. Additionally, there seemed to be some kind of event at a school or party, hinted at by balloons and confetti, but it wasn’t clearly explained, which made parts of the story feel incomplete.
Overall, Creepy Af is a great short film with a talented cast, a good story and aesthetic. I really hope we get a sequel to the short film in the future!
