The first reactions are in for Paramount Pictures’ upcoming animated film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem – releasing in cinemas on August 2, 2023.
Critics were invited to a non-final/work in progress screening of the movie in the U.S., therefore Mutant Mayhem isn’t finished, however these are the reactions from what has been seen so far, and it’s looking to be very positive.
Germain Lussier, from entertainment news outlet Gizmodo, has high praise for the story, writing that it’s ‘effortlessly cool & retro, while also being hip & hilarious. It wraps you up in a meaningful story while weaving a brand new turtle tale.’ Lussier also mentions that the ‘music choices are amazing’.
Tessa Smith from Mama’s Geeky site has shared that the film is ‘an absolute blast’, and there are ‘so many nods and mentions that long time turtle fans will love’. Smith also comments on the story, that it ‘feels fresh and unique’.
Erik Davis, an interviewer and managing director for Fandango, comments that Mutant Mayhem has ‘awesome animation’, and it’s packed with ‘teriffic humor’ and ‘tons of references’.
In a secondary part to Erik’s tweet, he writes that it’s a ‘Brilliant decision to have the Turtles voiced by actual teenagers – it adds so much to the film tonally’. Davis also mentions ‘It is an origin story, but it pulls the best parts of TMNT lore & adds freshness to it all’.
Junior Felix, owner of The Hashtag Show writes that ‘this will make any 90’s kid happy and want more’, and Felix also praises Seth Rogen for producing the film.
