Paul King’s Wonka movie was released by Warner Bros. in 2023, and fans have been eagerly awaiting a sequel, however there were recent rumours which spread online have put doubt on that happening.
Despite recent reports from Variety which spurred those rumours about Wonka 2 being ‘delayed indefinitely’ due to Timothée Chalamet, the second movie is still in development and ‘a sequel was always the plan’.
Simon Farnaby; who wrote the screenplay for the first Wonka film, has offered clarification on the situation.
‘Hi all, just wanted to clear up some rumours about Wonka 2 after my Variety interview. My quotes were taken little out of context by some people. I 100% did not say Wonka 2 wasn’t happening. A sequel was always the plan. Everyone is working really hard on it. WB are committed. There is a great script by Paul and I. Timmy wants to do it (like I said!) it’s just about working out schedules and making sure it’s as fantastic as we know it can be – and these things take a little time. Very sorry for any confusion! What’s next for Willy Wonka?
At the end of the first movie, Willy Wonka achieved his initial dream and cemented his future as a chocolatier when he finally became the owner of his very own chocolate factory.
While there are no details revealed by Paul King or Simon Farnaby about what will happen in the next film, it’s bound to be focusing on his journey of becoming famous for getting chocolate to everyone around the world.
There’s still a very long time before he becomes an older reclusive factory owner known in Gene Wilder’s iteration this film, although this could explore what leads him to become this.
Eventually it will lead to where he would invite Charlie and four other lucky golden ticket winners into the chocolate factory, in order to be the right one to take it over.
After the 1971 film, there would have also been a sequel based on Roald Dahl’s book Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, unfortunately Dahl disliked this adaptation of his book.
