Paramount Pictures and Skydance’s Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1 is the seventh film in Tom Cruise’s blockbuster franchise – releasing on July 10, in the UK.
Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise has delivered on yet another very fun action-packed film. Dead Reckoning Part 1 is also a thrilling rat-race style adventure, combined with espionage on an epic scale and the death-defying stunts are jaw-dropping!
Surprisingly, Mission Impossible 7 does have a more humorous tone to it, compared to the rest of the franchise. Simon Pegg and Tom Cruise’s dialogue with eachother are hilarious.
There is a typical McGuffin in the plot that’s been quite a few times in films and it’s something that still manages to be executed well.
The concept of the story is contemporary, almost futuristic in nature, yet nothing new in science-fiction films. The only difference is that the lines are just now becoming blurred between reality and fiction, that makes this looming advanced threat more daunting than ever before. Although, it still makes for an interesting watch
Hayley Atwell is a brilliant addition to the cast, who shines throughout. Atwell’s character is interesting, almost matching with Cruise’s high level of energy and does well to deliver a strong screen prescense.
I absolutely love Henry Czerny’s intense line delivery in his scenes. It’s also great to see Ving Rhames and Rebecca Ferguson back again.
Pom Klementieff had plenty of exciting action scenes, especially the fight choreography. Esai Morales’ performance as a villain was deadpan, cold and calculating to see, Morales seems to do well in these roles as evident in his recent portrayl as Deathstroke, in DC’s Titans series.
Tom Cruise’s stunts are never short of being both terrifying and fantastic. Stunt coordinator, Wade Eastwood did some tremendous work, especially for the last part of the film that left me gobsmacked. There’s also a fun scene that reminds me of a lot of that iconic moment from The Great Escape with the motorcycle.
Lorne Balfe’s scores are incredibly bold, these soundtracks are now one of my favourites to hear coming out of this year. It was also in a Dolby Cinema, and it sounds amazing with a heavy bass in the intense action sequences that are also throttling the room.
Final thoughts
Dead Reckoning Part 1 is a hugely entertaining film. Tom Cruise’s movies always have a “Go big or go home” type of attitude to them, and he’s certainly all in for this!
It’s somewhat cliché to write this, however, this film does actually feel like a mission that’s impossible, considering everything that these characters now have to go up against.
Just like Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse, this is also a film in two-parts, to be released at a later date. Therefore, the story isn’t fully wrapped up until part 2. I did leave the cinema feeling satisfied about where the story is currently at. Can’t wait to see it conclude in Part 2 on June 28, 2024.
