No Place for Football is a Stirring documentary about a beautiful game in the most remote place.
This feature documentary explores perseverance, identity, and the unifying power of sport in one of the most remote regions on Earth. Set along the Arctic Circle, the film follows Nuuk-based football club, B67, as they navigate a series of obstacles as they travel north to compete in Greenland’s uniquely brief football season.
Told in a gripping style as part fly on the wall providing intimate moments of the individuals of the B67 squad amidst this short season of action along with talking heads ranging from the commentator to the Greenland National team manager.
Throughout the lovely photography afforded by the picturesque landscape, it cannot be denied how important this short season is to the small group of men in each of the eight sides and what it means to play as an expression of themselves in a life full of routine, rigidity and cold.
While the team overcome obstacles throughout – from cold weather, to long flights and delays in transportation – the bond the team have is clear to see and that is what will get them over the line.
There have been many football documentaries in recent years – be it focusing on an individual (Asif Kapadia’s excellent Maradona) or the ‘All or Nothing’ series on Amazon Prime which has featured Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Arsenal in recent years. Like the western genre, football has been around so long how can you tell a familiar story except tell it from a different viewpoint – as we do here with football in a small setting.
It serves as a reminder, that football is the global game. And with the biggest World Cup approaching in two weeks time featuring 48 teams across three countries (USA, Canada and Mexico) arriving from Curacao to DR Congo in the seven week tournament.
Directed by Brandon Scott Smith and Derek Sullivan Smith, the film is a winning combination of the underdog story and how sport can bring people together when winning a tournament as a team is the eventual goal
No Place for Football is available to stream on all platforms from May 29th.
