In the UK, Sony will be removing 551 movies and tv shows from the PlayStation Store.

Customers who used their hard-earned money to purchase those digital products will have them taken away from their video library. This comes after Son has chosen not to renew the digital license with StudioCanal on the PlayStation Store.

Among the list of 551 films and shows being removed from September 1, 2026 are: Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Total Recall, RoboCop (2014), Paddington 1 & 2, Shaun the Sheep Movie, Platane seasons 1 – 3, Versailles season 2 – 3 and The Young Pope season 1 – 2.

The same situation also happened to Germany and Austria on August 21, 2022; where Sony removed StudioCanal digital movies from the PlayStation store due to licensing agreements not being renewed. There was no full or partial refunds issued for loss of digital items.

This news comes just a days after Rockstar Games announced there will only be a digital code in the box for the ‘physical versions’ of Grand Theft Auto VI, instead of a disc.

Digital licenses can still be revoked by Sony or any other digital store at any time and if you lose your account, the media you purchased is gone, whereas a physical disc which has the base game or movie/show/music, preserves the initial offline game and ownership, and you also have the ability to resell the media when you no longer want it, or buy it at cheaper price on the secondhand market.
